Confined Space Management
The StayLive Confined Space Working Group set out the specific requirements for applying AS 2865:2009 Confined Spaces to generating plant and facilities to ensure consistent interpretation and practical compliance across the NZ generation sector.
Overview
The StayLive electricity generators of New Zealand use Australian Standard (AS) 2865:2009 as our standard for ensuring safe work in confined spaces.

Overview
The following statements define areas of common approach in confined space management in accordance with AS 2865:2009:
- Mandatory pre-entry atmospheric testing and continuous monitoring of confined spaces
- Mandatory safety observers in place for all confined space work
- Mandatory emergency response and rescue plans in place; practised and rehearsed prior to entry
- Confined spaces are classified to the standard set in AS 2865:2009
- The Confined Space Certificate or Permit is always used in conjunction with an Access Permit, Work Authority or General Work, as well as a Safe Work Method Statement (e.g. Job Safety Analysis). Refer to the Work Control Procedures for more information on work controls.
Confined Space Training
As described in AS 2865:2009 training can be divided into two groups:
- General Awareness Training: This provides a general understanding of relevant legislation, standards, confined space hazards and associated risks. This is specifically for groups who do not work in confined spaces but who require an overview of confined spaces (such as visitors or general staff working on site). The resource below (StayLive Confined Space General Awareness Training) is intended for use as described above and is not to be used to replace relevant unit standards and required competency.
-
Specific Training to NZQA Standards: Refer to the Training and Competency Guidelines.
