Managing Water Hammer Risks

Date of Incident: 8 December 2025
Description:

During planned outages at our hydro power stations, several dewatering and rewatering operations are scheduled. These processes involve draining and refilling penstocks, turbines, and associated pipework. If not managed carefully, rapid changes in water flow or pressure can result in 'water hammer' - a sudden pressure surge that can cause significant equipment damage, pipe ruptures, or pose serious safety risks to personnel.
